Growth Mindset

We know that pupils who have a positive attitude towards their learning will make good progress and be confident and successful learners.  The theories of Dr. Carol Dweck, a leading researcher in the field of motivation and achievement, are embedded within our school approach and ethos.

Growth Mindset

Dr. Carol Dweck identifies the characteristics of learners with a fixed and a growth mindset. Mindsets are beliefs about yourself and your basic qualities such as your intelligence, your talents and your personality.

A Growth Mindset means that intelligence can be developed, which has a positive effect on motivation and achievement. Dweck’s research shows that we produce confident learners when we praise students for the process they engage in and not for being bright, clever or talented.

The Learning Pit

This is a super visual aid that is on display in all of our classrooms. We want children to know that learning can sometimes be difficult and this is when the best learning takes place. We talk about strategies children can draw upon to help themselves e.g. ask a friend or finding another way. Mistakes are good and help us to learn. See document below for more information.

The Power of Yeti

We also use 'the power of yet!'. WE CANT DO IT....YET! Each class has their own yeti which helps to remind them of this. Every day our brain is making new connections and we are all learning and growing together. Learning is exciting and facing challenges and taking risks helps us to move forward and achieve and succeed.  The Power of Yet is embedded in our marking code and supports children with next steps in their learning.
